CONGRATULATIONS - THEY MADE IT!

IT’S THE TAKING PART THAT COUNTS

Well done and many congratulations go to ABD team for taking part and completing Race for life which took place on Sunday the 2nd of June 2013 at Lydiard Park, Swindon.  The race was entered by thousands of women in order to help raise money to beat cancer as part of a fundraising event...

“I have entered Race for Life on many occasions but this was my first as Team Leader.  Team ABD did me proud and I am delighted that we have raised so much for such a good cause.  The race was very emotional for everyone but for me particularly as my Father is battling with lung cancer.  After hurting my knee, I didn't think I would be able to walk round let alone run, but I jogged all the way and was delighted with my finishing time of 32 minutes .
 Lisa Sidwell

ABD team consisted of Lisa Sidwell (Team Leader), Catherine Cole, Carole Sanders, Sally Mason, Cindy Ervine, Rachel Fereday, Annette Janman, Lisa Coates, Sharon Perkins, Frances Nash and her daughter Alice...

“I shocked myself and managed to jog the whole way in 42 minutes!!! Maybe I am not as unfit as I thought I was. I have managed to raise nearly £300.00.  It was a super day with a fantastic atmosphere and great support. It very much gives you a great sense of self-satisfaction to do something so worthwhile.”
Lisa Coates

“This was my first race for life and I really enjoyed the day.  It was very inclusive of all abilities and the support from spectators was fantastic, they really spurred the runners on. I was very happy to just finish as it was actually the first time that I had run as far as 5k! However I am very proud of my 9 year old daughter.  It was also her first time that she had run as far as 5k too.”
Frances Nash

The day was an emotional one for all.  Onlookers cheered and waved to a sea of female runners and walkers wearing pink t-shirts.  Everyone was there for a reason of their own. All had great determination.  All were supporting a very good cause.

“After my mam died of breast cancer in January 2008, I decided to try to get fitter so started jogging. This was something which I had never even thought to do before then. So that year I kicked off with my first 5k race for life.  Every race I have been in the atmosphere has been absolutely fantastic and I have thoroughly enjoyed my jogging.“
Carole Sanders

The weather was great not to mention ABD finishing times.  Catherine Cole who is an experienced runner and has run Race for Life on a number of occasions was delighted to finish within the top 30 runners in just over 26 minutes shortly followed by Rachel Fereday.  Cindy Ervine and Alice were not far behind!

Well done and many congratulations to ABD Team.

The event was a sell-out!!
Approximately 400 people filled the Corn Exchange and listened to Monty chatting about his life, gardening and career. The slides of his garden and not forgetting Nigel his dog were amazing! AN INTERESTING CASE

LEAVING WILTSHIRE BUT NOT ABD!

Awdry Bailey and Douglas partner and head of commercial Roger Chadwick received a glowing recommendation from new owners of The Miclaran Hotel who gave up their jobs to be based on Isle of Wight.

The Miclaran Hotel, Shanklin is a family run hotel situated adjacent to the famous cliff walk and occupies an elevated position overlooking the English Channel with fantastic panoramic views...

The Isle of Wight is a county and the largest island off England. It is located in the English Channel a few miles off the Hampshire coastline separated from Great Britain. The island has beautiful resorts, a favourable climate and there is plenty to do and see!

Famous for its picturesque villages, it is also steeped in history. Queen Victoria built her much loved summer residence and final home – Osborne House. Also, home to poets Swinburne, Tennyson and many more famous people over the period of time have all enjoyed the Isle of Wight.

“We are so excited at the prospect of moving there and looking forward to running our own guest house.  ABD has done a fantastic job and we would like to thank Roger for all that he has done, and our thanks too to Janet his secretary.

Thank you so much for helping us make this life changing move, it has not been easy but Roger has smoothed the way.  We can now begin this exciting new venture and a whole new way of life”                                             Mr and Mrs I

AWDRY BAILEY AND DOUGLAS SOLICITORS ARE ONE OF THE TOP DONATING FIRMS NATIONWIDE!

WILL AID MONTH - ABD PROBATE TEAM HELPS...

Awdry Bailey and Douglas Solicitors took part in Will Aid in November 2012 and raised in excess of £5,400.00 for 9 Will Aid charities. This means they are in the top forty of the 1,400 solicitors that participated - a fantastic achievement.

As part of the Will Aid campaign, ABD’s Probate team; Catherine Cole, Nicola Hibbert, Naomi Hill, Lynnette Hilliard and Simon Lofthouse donated their professional legal skills and time to draw up basic standard for local people, free of charge. In return for this service, the clients made a donation to Will Aid. Will Aid is the UK’s leading charity will-writing scheme and offers everybody an opportunity to update or make their will in return for a donation.  The money raised is shared by 9 well known charities: ActionAid, Age UK, British Red Cross, Christian Aid, NSPCC, Save the Children, Sightsavers, SCIAF (Scotland) and Trocaire (Northern Ireland).

The campaign was a busy and successful one. Approximately 75 Wills were written for local people, giving their families the security of a properly drafted Will as well as the opportunity to support popular charities.

Nicola Hibbert from ABD said:

“We enjoyed taking part in this campaign and would like to thank all the people who donated so generously in order to make Will Aid’s fundraising efforts such a success”.

ABD’s contribution will be added to the nationwide total, currently standing at £1.8m and expected to reach over £2 million. This money will make a real and lasting difference to vulnerable children, families and older people in the UK and around the world.

In recognition of the fantastic amount of money raised by ABD, Age UK Senior Regional Legacy Manager, Mr Robert Bracher, representing the Will Aid charities, presented the ABD Probate Team with a framed certificate to thank them for donating their time and professional skills to such a worthy and beneficial cause said:

“Age UK are so grateful for the fantastic support Awdry, Bailey and Douglas Solicitors have given the Will Aid campaign. We are the UK's largest charity working with and for older people and as our older population is growing every year with demand for our services increasing. We don't know what the future will hold, but we do know that with our share of the money raised through Will Aid and the support of people who remember us in their wills, we will be able to continue providing much needed services and vital support to help older people in the future.”

IT’S THE TAKING PART THAT COUNTS!

MAYORS SALVER CHALLENGE RACE 12 FEBRUARY 2013
Devizes Market Place was busier than usual yesterday lunch time as happy onlookers eating warm pancakes provided by The Black Swan Hotel, cheered on the teams that entered the Devizes Pancake Races. This fun event is held annually on Pancake Day and is organised by Age UK Wiltshire.

The majority of races were entered by local schools, as well as local businesses, including ABD team Catherine Cole, Tom Paget, Sharon Hayward and Simon Lofthouse. This was going to be a difficult event as ABD were last year’s winners and were keen to hold onto the first prize Silver Salver...

The Mayors Salver Challenge Race
The weather wasn’t exactly warm in the month of February but soon “heated up” when Catherine Cole sprinted as fast as she could whilst tossing her pancake in the air!  The relay race had begun!  It was a tough race against the other teams who had also entered in the first heat, but ABD managed to win. This meant that they had got through to the final!

The final – when the going gets tough the tough get going!
Wilkinsons and Age UK Wiltshire had also made it through to the final as well as ABD.  This race was definitely going to be a tough one if ABD were to keep hold of the Silver Salver...

Ready, steady, GO...

Catherine ran as fast as she could again whilst tossing the pancake in the air as onlookers cheered and watched in amazement. Unfortunately as she hurriedly tossed the pancake – disaster – it fell to the floor!  After a speedy recovery, Catherine handed over to Sharon who sprinted faster than ever to make up for any lost time. Luckily, it was a smooth handover to Tom who whilst anxiously waiting knew time was of the essence.  Another smooth run and the pancake safely tossed until Tom handed over to Simon when disaster struck again! During the final handover Tom and Simon dropped the frying pan. However, this didn’t stop Simon who was determined to win making every effort to reach the finishing line before Wilkinsons.  It was touch and go as Simon fought back but unfortunately was pipped to the post. ABD were unable to regain their winning title but managed a valiant second place. It was a fun race! Watch out though ABD will be back again next year to try and win!

Team spirit
As well as ABD team taking part, other businesses took part including ; Wilkinsons, The Black Swan Hotel, Age UK Wiltshire, Curves of Devizes, Community First and more.

It’s the taking part that counts
Well done team for taking part and supporting a very worthwhile community cause.  Good donations were made to Age UK Wiltshire including a donation of £100 from Awdry Bailey and Douglas.  All profits from this event go to Age UK Wiltshire to fund their work with older people.
